The Boeing Higher Education Program was held on 2nd August at the University of Tokyo, students of Urawa high school joined the program. In the beginning of the event, the member of the Boeing Company gave a lecture. Thereafter, students visited laboratories of four fields related to aircraft technologies (structural mechanics, aerodynamics, control, and engine) in groups.
In the structural mechanics laboratory, we lectured about structure of aircraft and leading-edge studies, and show an experiment which is performed in the aircraft development actually. In the experiment, conventional material and lighter and stronger cutting-edge material were compared. Students asked questions by observation of detail, such as the appearance of the failure points of a test specimen and graphs displayed during the test. In the summarization work of the test after that, questions were made from nearly all students who participated. Especially, the things like “why the material is used there” and “characteristics of the material” was focused with handout’s figure, which colored materials used in aircraft, and students seemed to have understood that there is a sense of the choice for every single material.
Afterwards, students who visited the laboratories of four fields gathered, and the design of the future plane was carried out. It was a short time, but the students argued lively in groups, and were able to build up the plane that held the points of the latest technologies. For example, the team that designed the aircraft has no tail, it became problem how to make a rudder that is attached to the tail usually. After discussion, students came up to an idea that the rudder of the tail was integrated with that of the other wing, and in fact, this idea is the one used in the actual aircraft, which is called the elevon! I was very surprised with their ability to understand and create.
In the first, I thought the program was difficult for high school students, but since they applied voluntarily, they absorbed knowledge eagerly and argued with friends and college students positively, and finally splendid future plane was completed. Discussion with them was exciting for me. I hope they return here in the future.
