The 75th Komaba Festival was held from November 22 to 24, 2024, at the University of Tokyo’s Komaba Campus. In this festival, a team of student assistants from the Faculty of Engineering’s Public Relations Office held an exhibit titled "Learn More About the Faculty of Engineering!" The purpose of this exhibit was to spread the attraction of engineering and student life at the Faculty of Engineering. Over the three days, more than 1,000 visitors participated.
The visitors came not only from the Greater Tokyo Area but also from all over Japan, with some even attending from overseas. Approximately 30% of the visitors were junior and senior high school students, many of whom were gathering information for university entrance exams. Some visitors were also interested in experiencing the campus atmosphere, having family members currently studying at the University of Tokyo.
The exhibit featured posters introducing all 16 departments of the Faculty of Engineering. These posters were created by students from each department and included essential information such as class schedules and employment destinations, as well as student-perspective insights into the highlights of each department and popular courses. In the visitor surveys, there were many positive comments such as, "I was able to learn about the wide range of departments within the Faculty of Engineering," "I gained a deeper understanding of the departments I’m interested in," "It helped me with career planning," and "The atmosphere of each department was well conveyed." Additionally, a crossword puzzle was distributed to visitors, with keywords based on the content of the department introduction posters. The puzzle could be solved by reading through the posters, which helped visitors learn about each department in a fun and interactive way.
Furthermore, a consultation corner was set up where current engineering students answered questions from the visitors. They responded to a variety of questions, including inquiries about studying for entrance exams. Throughout the event, there were many opportunities for visitors to ask questions not only at the consultation corner but also during the exhibit, highlighting the high level of interest in the Faculty of Engineering. Many survey responses praised the student assistants, with comments such as, "The students answered questions very patiently," and "It was great to have the opportunity for direct interaction."
In addition to these exhibits, there were displays of interview articles written by the student assistants and the faculty's public relations magazine, Ttime!. A participatory poster was also set up, where visitors could write down their ideas on sticky notes, which was enjoyed by many. Although this was the first time for the student assistants to participate in the Komaba Festival, the response exceeded expectations, with a large number of visitors attending and providing positive feedback. Building on this experience, we hope to continue developing events at open campus events and university festivals, enabling more people to acknowledge the attraction of student life at the Faculty of Engineering and the field of engineering itself.
