The 30th Techno-science café, “What is the strength? Let’s make a pasta bridge” was held on August 2, 2019. About 30 elementary and junior high school students participated in the event. At the beginning of this event, Lecturer Hatano from Department of Mechanical Engineering gave a lecture, whose title was “How to design things”. In order to consider how to design a strong bridge, she explained the strength of materials. After that, she explained with quizzes how to use pasta as materials. The children heard her lecture and felt the strength by touching pasta. Some children took notes eagerly.
After the lecture was over, children started to design and make a pasta bridge. Each child designed a strong bridge and made it using pasta and hot bond. We, students, supported them making pasta bridges. The event to make a pasta bridge with pasta and hot bond has held at May Festival, the school festival, but the event to design it does not have held. Therefore we were concerned about whether children could design it. However, they were designing and making it so well that they blew away our worries.
When they finished making their bridges, we measured the strength of them. In order to measure the strength easily, we experimented how many weights break the bridge. The children whose bridge a few weights broke made a stronger bridge by reinforcing it or redesigning a new one. On the other hand, it was beyond our assumption that many bridges did not break when every weight was put on the bridges. The strength of such bridges was measured using a force gauge.
The children designed their bridge, incorporating diagonal beams. They made use of what they learned in the lecture.
Their parents were also interested in making pasta bridges for making the bridges and measuring strength easily at home. I would be glad if this event motivates them to design things.
