The 31st Tokyo University Techno-Science Café, "Useful Surface Science to Know -Science of Wetting-" was held on August 3, 2019. About 30 elementary and junior high school student participated. First, Shunto Arai from department of applied physics gave a lecture on the surface of materials. As an introduction, he spoke that most of what we see are surfaces and surfaces of materials are harder to examine than contents of those. The children seemed to listen to the wonders of surfaces. He gave an example that when a small bottle is turned over, the content spills when it is alcohol, but it does not when it is water, after telling that the smaller materials, the larger surface areas. The children seemed to understand the importance that a mouth of a bottle is small and seemed interested in the surface tension of water. After the lecture, we experimented on the surface tension of water. The children made small plastic boats and watched that they did not move on the water. On the other hand, the boats with adhesive on the back moved slowly on the water. A child wondered about the phenomenon. I explained to him that it was because the solvent of adhesive dissolved in the water behind the small boat and the surface tension changed slightly. Another child experimented with a larger boat to watch what would happen. We also had an interesting experiment where we watched and touched polymer films that move spontaneously on a water surface due to the difference of surface tension of water and the solvent. 2019年8月3日、第31回東大テクノサイエンスカフェ 「知って得する表面の科学-ぬれるぬれないを科学する-」が開催されました。30人近くの小・中学生が参加しました。最初に物理工学専攻の荒井俊人講師に物質の表面について講演をしていただきました。導入として私たちが普段目にする身の回りのもののほとんどが表面であるのに、物質の表面は中身に比べて調べるのが難しいことを述べられました。子供たちは表面の不思議に聞き入っている様子でした。小さいものほど表面積の割合が大きくなるというお話があった上で、小瓶を逆さにした時、中身がアルコールの時はこぼれてしまうのに対して、水の時はこぼれない例を挙げていただきました。子供たちは小瓶の口が小さいことが重要であることを理解できた様子で、水の表面張力に興味を示しているようでした。講演の後、水の表面張力の実験を行いました。子供たちは自分でプラスチックの小舟を作り、水に浮かべても進まないのを確認しました。一方、後方部に接着剤をつけた小舟は水上でゆっくり動きました。その現象を疑問に思う子がいたので私は、船より後方の水に接着剤の一部が溶け、わずかに表面張力が変わるからだと説明しました。もう一つ大きな船を作って実験している子もいました。水の表面張力の効果で激しく動き回る物質を見て触るという貴重な実験もできました。
Lecturer Arai talked about soap bubbles expanding into a spherical shape due to the physical properties of surfactants in soap solution. We conducted an experiment to create a soap bubble that is difficult to break. We used water, dishwashing detergent, laundry glue, glycerin and other accessible items because he wanted the children to experiment at home. Dishwashing detergents have different physical properties depending on the surfactant ratio, acidity, neutrality, alkalinity, etc. The children seek the optimized composition to prevent the soap bubbles from breaking. We also created soap solution with the children. We enjoyed it as much as children, considering that solution would be durable when using laundry glue and that it would be difficult to dry when using glycerin. I advised a girl in need. It was not easy because the condition changed depending on the temperature and humidity in the room. Some children created frames with wires and experimented on the optimal frame thickness and circle size and how to operate the frames. 荒井先生にシャボン玉が界面活性剤の物性によって球形に膨らむことなどをお話しいただき、割れにくいシャボン玉を作る実験を行いました。実験を家庭でも実験できるようにという先生の思いから、水、食器用洗剤、洗濯糊、グリセリンなど主に手に入れやすい身近なものを用いました。食器用洗剤は界面活性剤の割合や酸性、中性、アルカリ性など液性により物性が異なり、子供たちは何をどのような割合で混ぜるとシャボン玉が割れにくいのか考えていました。私たち大学生も子供たちに混じってシャボン液を作りました。洗濯糊を使うと丈夫になることやグリセリンを使うと乾燥しづらくなることなどを考えながら、私たちも子供たちに負けないくらい楽しんでいました。手詰まりになった女の子にはアドバイスしました。室温や湿度により環境条件が変わるので、教えることは簡単ではありませんでした。針金で枠を作り、割れにくいシャボン玉を作るための枠の太さやその円の大きさ、動かし方を実験している子もいました。
Lastly, we had a lecture on SDGs. SDGs stands for Sustainable Development Goals. Lecturer Arai talked about one of his researches that the latest organic materials with electronic functions have structures similar to that of cell membranes and soap bubbles. His research contributes to SDGs, the international goal. I met students from different fields and help each other to teach the children in the workshop. This event was a valuable experience for me to know the importance of science. It motivated me to research. I would like to participate in the next Tokyo University Techno-Science Café.
最後にSDGsの講演をいただきました。SDGsとは持続可能な開発目標のことです。荒井先生に彼の研究の一つである、電子機能を持った最新の有機材料が、細胞膜やシャボン玉と似た構造になっていることをお話しいただきました。先生の研究は国際目標であるSDGsに貢献しています。今回のイベントは、私にとって、専門分野が異なる大学生たちと出会い、協力して子供たちに教える中で、科学の素晴らしさを知る貴重な経験となりました。今後の研究のモチベーションにつながる機会でした。次回のテクノサイエンスカフェにもぜひ関わりたいと思いました。
