The 32th Techno-science café, “Construction Work Using LEGO Brick” was held on October 19, 2019. About 30 elementary school students participated in the event.
At the beginning of this event, Prof. Gondo from Department of Architecture gave a lecture about building construction and the relationship between architecture and LEGO brick. Showing a product of the University of Tokyo LEGO Club, some buildings constructed with box unit construction, he explained intelligibly that they have some things in common, solving problems in construction site and building things with LEGO brick.
The 15 minutes lecture was over, now was the time for children to build LEGO brick. Children were divided into groups of 4 or 5 children each, and built LEGO brick twice, that is, dealt with two products, which had almost the same structure.
First, children were requested to start building just after LEGO parts were given and complete product as fast as possible. Some groups finished working in 40 minutes, and some others could not finish. However, the first work is like a test, and the actual one is the second. Because, after the first work, they would find some reflections and improvements, make construction plan and get in the second work. This planning process is one of the most important factor in building construction. In review meeting after the first work, everyone seemed to be able to find some problem, whether in a successful group or not.
Every group made construction plan and then started the second work. The second work aimed at finish building in 20 minutes. Not all groups were able to achieve the goal, but each team could shorten construction time significantly compared to the first work, because they planned very well.
Though it was a difficult work that required to respond to the accident, such as mistakes in building process, some groups had quite detailed construction plans, which surprise to us.
Finally, each groups had a LEGO model of Yasuda Auditorium.

I started preparing for this event from designing LEGO model of Yasuda Auditorium. This model has some mechanisms, which make it easy for children to think how to build the model faster. Children made full use of them, even beyond my expectation. Thanks to LEGO brick, child-friendly tool, everyone took part in group work initiatively. Besides, it was also a very meaningful time for us to go back to the basics of building construction,”making things in a group” and look back on our research.
Even in tools made for playing, such as LEGO brick, there are many seeds of studies and many viewpoints to see the world. I would appreciate it if you make use of such tools in various fields, not only architecture. Lastly, as a member of the University of Tokyo LEGO club, I would like to say, “Please pay attention to the infinite possibilities of LEGO bricks.”
