Students of Fukuoka Prefectural Fukuoka High School visited Hongo campus of the University of Tokyo for a field trip on July 25, 2013. The students were divided into some groups and intended to go around various laboratories. I accompanied the group which was planned to visit the laboratories in School of Engineering. 7月25日、福岡県立福岡高校の1年生約80名が大学見学のために東京大学本郷キャンパスを訪れました。生徒たちはいくつかのグループに分かれて様々な研究室を見学する予定になっています。私はそのうちの工学系研究科の研究室を回るグループに同行しました。


We visited Suzuki-Tsuchiya lab in Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at first. The lab studies automatic control of airplane and so on. In this time, we experienced “flight simulator” which simulates controlling an airplane. We can see a view from cockpit on displays, and its control stick was quite similar to the real one. Boeing 747 landing was assumed, but most of the high school students’ airplane failed to land and clashed into the ground. However, they were watching the displays with their eyes shining and I thought they understood the difficulty of controlling an airplane with much enjoyment. 最初に訪れたのは航空宇宙工学専攻の鈴木・土屋研究室です。同研究室では航空機の自動制御などを研究しています。今回は飛行機の操縦をシミュレーションできる「フライトシミュレーター」を体験させていただきました。複数のディスプレイにコックピットからの景色が映し出され、操縦桿もリアルです。ボーイング747の着陸のという設定でしたが、ほとんどの生徒の飛行機はうまく着陸できずに地面に激突…。それにもかかわらず生徒は目を輝かせながら画面に見入っていて、飛行機の操縦の難しさを楽しみながら体験できたようでした。


After that, we visited the experimental tank. The experimental tank, which belongs to Miyata-Akimoto-Tanaka lab, has a length of 90m (4 times as long as 25m swimming pool!). The lab studies designing shapes of ships using this experimental tank. The high school students were very surprised to see such large-scale experimental facility. After seeing the tank, the member of the lab explained their theme of research. They talked about topics in a broad range of fields for not only designing ships shape but something related to oceanography. The high school students were very interested in them and some students questioned actively. 次に私たちは船形試験水槽に向かいました。船形試験水槽とはシステム創生学専攻の宮田・秋元・田中研究室が管理する長さ90mもある水槽です(なんと25mプールの4倍近く)。同研究室ではこの水槽を使って船形設計などの研究をされています。この水槽を実際に見た生徒たちは実験設備の想像以上のスケールに圧倒されているようでした。水槽見学の後は学生が各々の研究テーマについて説明してくださいました。船舶設計に限らず海洋に関する幅広い分野を研究しているそうで高校生も関心が高く、積極的に質問する生徒も見られました。

I believe that they high school students become interested in engineering through this laboratories visitation and will carry the future of technology-intensive nation of Japan.
